SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Sharknets or culls are not the answer to the Paul Wilcox tragedy
September 14,2014 The calm reaction to paul wilcox’s death confirmed our appetite for harsh WA-style responses to shark attacks is dwindling. https://www.reddit.com/login?dest=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reddit.com%2Fsubmit%3Furl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.smh.com.au%252Fcomment%252Fsmh-editorial%252Fshark-nets-or-culls-are-not-the-answer-to-the-paul-wilcox-tragedy-20140913-10g0pr.html%26title%3DShark%2Bnets%2Bor%2Bculls%2Bare%2Bnot%2Bthe%2Banswer%2Bto%2Bthe%2BPaul%2BWilcox%2Btragedy http://www.smh.com.au/comment/smh-editorial/shark-nets-or-culls-are-not-the-answer-to-the-paul-wilcox-tragedy-20140913-10g0pr.html 1/2 EDITORIAL Paul and Victoria Wilcox It was a sunny spring morning. Nature gave no hint of what was to come. In calm conditions off a beach where beginner surfers often practise, a shark attacked swimmer Paul Wilcox. Blood loss from his injuries is believed to have sealed the 50-year-old's fate. Random and swift, his death in Byron Bay this week was remarkable not just as a reminder that bad things happen even in the most picturesque places, but for the reaction from the Wilcox family and the local community. No calls for revenge. No shark culls. Byron Bay's beaches sit on the doorstep of a marine sanctuary: the mayor quickly ruled out netting them. The north coast calm matched that of Tathra in southern NSW, where a shark took Christine Armstrong in April. Aswimmer is seen near Clarkes Beach at Byron Bay, one day after Paul Wilcox was killed by a shark while swimming at the beach. But the story was different in Western Australia, where the state government sought to extend its controversial shark cull for another three years this 11:59AM Monday Mar 2, 2015 29416 online now Do you know more about a story? This week the WA Environmental Protection Authority refused to give the program its blessing, and the Premier has reluctantly called it off, although signalling hunts for individual "rogue" sharks may still take place. In fairness to WA, the state had suffered an unusual spike in shark fatalities: seven deaths in three years. And no one knows why; much about the species thought responsible, the great white, is still a mystery. We don't even know how many there are; speculation that a population recovery in the wake of vulnerable species protection in the 1990s could be behind the spike is unsubstantiated. Few governments have the fortitude to tell voters they are waiting for scientists to supply answers before they protect public safety, and the Barnett government's response had all the signs of acting for the sake of being seen to act. Of 68 sharks caught and shot last season none were white sharks. Tiger sharks were the main victims. They are not endangered – but neither are they implicated in the recent deaths. What Colin Barnett missed is that our appetite for such brutal action to protect our claim on the ocean seems to be diminishing even as more of us are embracing the water, and crossing paths with sharks: the number of shark attacks climbed from 6.5 a year on average in 1999-2000 to 15 a year the following decade. But fatalities remain low: an average of 0.9 a year from unprovoked attacks over 50 years. A January poll found 82 per cent of Australians don't think sharks should be killed and that we enter the water at our own risk. In NSW, 51 beaches from Newcastle to Wollongong are protected by nets between September and April. The nets do not close the beach to sharks but prevent them making swimming spots their regular territory. They also indiscriminately capture other marine life. Manly Council is calling for the state government to reduce the number of days the nets are in place. Our increasing willingness to share the ocean seems certain to ensure such calls will increase. It seems strange that in the 21st century, we are relying on a net system begun in 1937 to protect us. Surely tracking and digital technology is the way of the future? Meanwhile, with summer approaching, we must accept that sparkling days in the surf come with a modicum of danger.
